I recently ordered a fake tv burglar deterrent to use while away from home from amazon.com.  It has a timer and you can plug it in while away and it gives the appearance from the outside that someone is inside the house watching tv, just as the name implies.  I use timers when away for lamps, and I think this is just an added safety feature if you are away from home.
