Consumer Cafe: Grandma Gwen’s Beans

June 8th, 2012

This recipe recently won Best Baked Beans in my Southern Living Magazine. If you are having any barbecues this summer, you might want to give this easy recipe a try!

Grandma Gwen’s Beans

  • Yield: Makes 10 servings
  • Hands-on: 45 Minutes
  • Total: 2 Hours, 5 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 (1-lb.) package bacon slices
  • 4 medium-size yellow onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 (16-oz.) cans butter beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15-oz.) can lima beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (16-oz.) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (28-oz.) can baked beans

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cook bacon, in batches, in a large skillet over medium-high heat 8 to 10 minutes or until crisp. Remove bacon, and drain on paper towels, reserving desired amount of drippings in skillet. (We reserved about 3 Tbsp.) Crumble bacon.

2. Sauté onions in hot drippings over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes or until onions are tender. Add brown sugar and next 4 ingredients. Cover and cook 20 minutes. Combine butter beans, next 3 ingredients, bacon, and onion mixture in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish.

3. Bake at 350° for 1 hour.

Glam Alert: Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream

June 7th, 2012

Let me know if you are bored of how many different lotions and potions I use.  I like to mix it up a bit. I convince myself that all of this IS helping. Really. Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream is an oil-free night cream enriched with Seaweed, Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid to soften, hydrate and nourish the skin without clogging pores. It leaves the skin feeling soft and silky. It goes on a little greasy, but it quickly absorbs. From reading about this line of products, I think the entire Mario Badescu line is used by a lot of people with sensitive skin or acne-prone skin. I just like it. I can’t remember who originally recommend it to me but I am very happy with the results. I like anything and everything that hydrates my skin.

Have you tried anything from the Mario Badescu line? I am tempted to try the Mario Badescu Buttermilk Moisturizer. I don’t think I’ve ever tried anything with buttermilk but milk is good for the skin, and buttermilk is thicker, right? So surely it would be a good one too!

Oh goodness, I really love them all. So clever. And truly creative and beautiful photographs turned into the alphabet.

The end result will look like this:

It would make a great wedding, anniversary, or housewarming gift.

You can get a second entry into the drawing by liking them on Facebook.

Let me know in the comments section if you order one, or if you have ever given or received one.
