App of the Week: Breaking News

May 7th, 2012

I have followed Breaking News on Twitter for several years and always found it to be very accurate. It is what it says it is, BREAKING NEWS. Not complicated. I love being able to tell my friends and family stuff that hasn’t even made the airways yet. I’m current and hip. Now Breaking News has an app for Android and iPhone. If you follow a ton of people or business on Twitter it is easy to lose some of the more important tweets so I am thrilled to have the Breaking News app.

I always thought Breaking News on Twitter was news from the Associated Press. Breaking News is actually from MSNBC. So I downloaded the AP Mobile app to compare, and I must say I still like the Breaking News app the best. It’s easier to navigate AND there are no ads. Both apps are free, and I’m sure there are many other news apps you may like better. Like I previously stated, I have follows Breaking News on Twitter, so I’m a little partial to them, and once the app came out, I jumped on it.

On a side note, I also follow Breaking Storm on Twitter, which is part of Breaking News. They do not have an app yet, but you may want to add them to your Twitter, especially if you are following tornados this time of year. Very accurate warnings.

Do you have a favorite news app? Please share with me in the comments section.

Consumer Cafe: Spinach-Orzo Salad With Shrimp

May 4th, 2012

YUM-YUM.  Light and Filling. This is a great recipe from Food Network. Can you tell I’m into quick and easy?

Spinach-Orzo Salad With Shrimp

Kosher salt

1/2 cup orzo

4 cups spinach, thinly sliced

10 medium radishes, quartered

1 small cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced

1/2 red onion, quartered and thinly sliced

1/4 cup pitted oil-cured olives, chopped

1/2 cup packed fresh mint, chopped

1/2 cup packed fresh parsley, chopped

1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Freshly ground pepper

1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

Preheat the broiler. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the orzo and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain, rinse with cold water and shake dry.

Meanwhile, toss the spinach, radishes, cucumber, onion, olives, mint, parsley and 1/3 cup each lemon juice and olive oil in a large bowl. Add the orzo and season with salt and pepper.

Toss the shrimp with the remaining 2 tablespoons each lemon juice and olive oil in a bowl. Arrange on a foil-lined broiler pan and broil until slightly pink, 1 to 2 minutes. Turn and broil until just cooked through, 2 to 3 more minutes.

Divide the salad among plates. Top with the shrimp, sprinkle with the feta and season with pepper.

Glam Alert: Girl Meets Pearl

May 3rd, 2012

Yet another highlighter I’m obsessed with. I think this is number 4,653, but it’s my new favorite. Girl Meets Pearl is made by Benefit Cosmetics. It is described as a soft, golden-pink liquid pearl highlighter and comes in a container with a twist top applicator that allows a little product to appear at a time. Girl Meets Pearl is much more subtle than some of the other highlighters I use.

Recently, I was on the Sephora website, and was texting with a friend at the same time, and said, “quick, what’s your favorite product right now?” So once she said Girl Meets Pearl, I had to have it! Anything, and I mean An-E-Thang, that has the potential to make me look the slightest bit younger or glowier (new word) I’m all over it. Plus, I love pearls. If that matters.

You can wear it alone for a dewy look, or combine with your moisturizer, or just use as a highlight over the cheekbones, nose, etc. Try it everywhere before deciding what looks best, or what looks best for you on that particular day!

It was named by In Style Magazine as one of the Best Beauty Buys of 2011. That, along with my recommendation should be enough! Okay, maybe just In Style’s recommendation.
