Website of the Week: magazines.com

August 1st, 2012

Magazines.com is a one-stop shop for all your magazine needs. Now, stick with me, because I’m going to tell you how to safe A LOT of money on your magazine subscriptions.

I previously posted about Ebates, and how you can get rebates/refunds/cash back on your online purchases. If you have not signed up for Ebates, PLEASE do so. It is truly so easy, and I have hundreds of dollars in Ebates Big Fat Checks to prove it!

So, magazines.com is one of the thousands of stores that you can get cash back from Ebates. Normally, the rate is 26%. That means whatever your total is from magazines.com, you will be receiving 26% of that purchase back from ebates. Sounds good, right? Except sometimes Ebates has 40% back, and sometimes it has 52% cash back. That’s right, you will get over half of the purchase price refunded to you. AND, it doesn’t stop there because if you search, you will always find a coupon code for magazines.com. Typically you can find a coupon for at least $5 off your purchase. If you are signed up for Ebates, and receive their “Daily Double” email, you will want to take advantage of renewing your subscriptions through magazines.com. It’s very easy, even if you have a current subscription, to purchase a new subscription, and then combine the two. I did this the first time I ordered through magazines.com, and had no problem. And fortunately for me, all my magazines are listed on magazines.com, including my local favorite, Texas Monthly.

And remember, you can gift a magazine and the recipient will never know you paid half of the renewal price.

So, to recap, magazines.com, good.  Magazines.com through Ebates, even better!

Pantry Storage

July 31st, 2012

Here is a picture of my pantry. One of the things I loved about this house when we bought it was the large walk-in pantry. Originally I thought I would never be able to fill it up. Then it became too cluttered, and I had to get it organized.

I love these small containers from the Container Store for my flavored water packets.

I love these bins with handles from the Container Store for package storage.

And I have several lazy susans from the Container Store for canned goods.

I also love my Ribbon Bulletin Board, which I use to store coupons and repair service business cards.

What’s in your pantry? Do you have a little OCD like me, or is it a hot mess? Leave me a comment!

App of the Week: Who is Hot?

July 30th, 2012

No, no, no, this is not one of those rate a girl/boy as to whether they are hot or not. Get your minds out of the gutter, people!

Who is Hot? is an app that allows you to see all of your contacts’ current weather conditions. So, if you are like me living in hell, I mean Texas, you can instantly argue with your friends that you are in fact hotter than they are.

From iTunes:

Instantly check the weather for all contacts on your iPhone or iPod Touch

– Shows detailed local weather conditions and forecasts including animated radar

– Automatically syncs with your contacts list providing a fun and easy way to track weather across the country.

– Each entry is color-coded according to temperature and links to a detailed local weather report from wunderground.com

– Using GPS, your current location’s weather conditions are always listed first, so the application also acts as a digital thermometer.

– The distance between your current location and each of your contacts is also displayed

– Step off a plane anywhere in the world and instantly check the local weather conditions or see who your nearest contacts are. Alternatively, you can check on the weather for your friends and family back home.

– Sort your contacts by first name, last name, distance and temperature.

For some reason when I check my friends’ weather in Alaska or Michigan, I instantly feel like moving.

Oh, and it’s a free app.

Consumer Cafe: Sour Cream Pound Cake

July 27th, 2012

I am an Aggie Mom.  Years ago, when my son was at A&M, the Aggie Moms put together a cookbook.  I always tell my friends that I am published, because some of my recipes are in this cookbook. But there are many, many great family recipes that I love all in one place.  Maybe because we are all moms, or all southern, but there are hundreds of pages of recipes and my goal is to try each and every one of them before I die!

Sour Cream Pound Cake (JaNahn Rodriguez)

  • 1 cup butter
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs, separated
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or lemon extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream or buttermilk

Cream sugar and butter. Add 6 egg yolks. Sift together dry ingredients. Alternately add dry ingredients and sour cream to the sugar-shortening mixture. Add vanilla. Beat egg whites stiff and fold into mixture. Grease loaf or bundt pan, but do not flour it. Pour batter into pan and bake 1 ½ hours in at 325 degrees. Will be crusty and golden brown. Lightly dust with powdered sugar.
