USB Drives – Father’s Day Gift Idea

May 29th, 2012

There are lots of cute and quirky USB drives these days. All serve the same purpose. To store a bazillion documents or photos on one little teeny, tiny little plug in. Are you old enough to remember floppies or diskettes? Sadly, I go back to the prehistoric days of typewriters! Everything started out as an original back then.

Oh look, I lost focus. Back to the subject. I found some adorable USB drives on Etsy and wanted to share.

Here’s a cute guitar one for $75 from cerriousdesign.

These are made to look like camera film for $30 from newfocus.

Ones that are made to look like fishing lures from flashyfishdrive.

Here is a personalized leather case for carrying an ordinary flash drive from rntn for $18.50.

Charlie Brown Pez Dispenser Flash Drive for $25 from dhhdesign. There are about 800 different ones to choose from, so if your Dad has a particular interest, you could just search for a USB drive in that area and I’m sure you would find one! Also, Etsy is always a great site for finding anything.  So if your Dad is into Charlie Brown, just put Charlie Brown in the search bar and you will come up with lots of ideas!

There are lots of girly USB drives too! Just in case you were wondering . . .

Consumer Cafe: Ten Quick Low Calorie Desserts

May 25th, 2012

I found these quick, easy, low calorie desserts on the Biggest Loser website, and wanted to share.

1. Ricotta Fruit Cup. Fill a wineglass or parfait glass half-full with blueberries or fresh sliced strawberries. Top with 1/2 cup fat-free ricotta cheese, then drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon.

2. Roasted Fruits with Honey. Halve fruits such as peaches or nectarines and remove the pits. Place on a baking sheet and drizzle each half with 1 teaspoon honey. Roast in a 350°F oven until tender and juicy, about 15 minutes.

3. Banana-Peanut Butter Sandwich. Peel a banana and cut it in half lengthwise. Spread 1 tablespoon creamy reduced-fat peanut butter onto the cut side of one half, then top with the other half to create a banana sandwich. Cut into bite-size pieces, if desired.

4. Low-Cal “Ice Cream” Sandwich. Create a homemade frozen treat by sandwiching 2 tablespoons sugar-free whipped topping between 2 fat-free chocolate graham crackers. Cover with plastic wrap and pop into the freezer for 1 hour.

5. Baked Maple Apple. Core and halve an unpeeled apple and place it in a small microwavable bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and heat on high power in a microwave for 2 minutes. Drizzle each half with 1 tablespoon sugar-free maple syrup, then sprinkle with cinnamon or allspice.

6. Low-Cal Peanut Butter Cup. Stir 1 teaspoon creamy reduced-fat peanut butter into a sugar-free, fat-free chocolate pudding cup. It tastes just like a peanut butter cup!

7. Banana Milkshake. Peel an extra-ripe banana, cut it into chunks, and freeze in a ziptop bag. In a blender, process the frozen chunks with 1 cup fat-free milk or fat-free yogurt.

8. Healthy Latte. For a healthier alternative to the drinks sold at many coffee chains, pour 1 cup of cooled coffee over ice, add a small scoop of fat-free vanilla frozen yogurt, and top with a sprinkling of nutmeg or cocoa powder.

9. Angel Food Trifle. In a parfait glass, layer 2 small chunks of angel food cake (equal to one slice) with sliced berries of your choice and 1/2 cup fat-free frozen yogurt.

10. Not-So-Decadent Chocolate-Covered Strawberries. Dip 5 or 6 large fresh strawberries into 2 tablespoons fat-free chocolate sauce for a guilt-free version of chocolate-covered strawberries.

Glam Alert: Ceramic Hot Rollers

May 24th, 2012

I have the finest, straightest, thinnest hair; unless I want to go au natural and then it’s curly sue. Weird, huh? I used hot rollers in the past, and always thought they damaged my hair too much, and were way to hot to handle. I’ve used the curling iron for years, and sit and hold each curl to the count of 30. I decided to try hot rollers again after hearing that the new ceramic ones heated up instantly, and curled really well. Low and behold, they are so much easier than the curling iron, and I spend a lot less time on my hair. I used to blow dry with the brush to shape, and then curl, and hold, and pray that the curl would hold, and sometimes spray hairspray on top of the curling iron while on the top of my head to make it hold. I live in a very humid area, so sometimes it would take that just to keep the curls in long enough to walk out the door. Now, I blow dry in a minute, without worrying about styling, and then put in hot rollers, which really takes less time than holding each curl in the curling iron. If I have a lot of time, I will leave them in and get on the computer, or do a few errands around the house. But if I don’t have any time, which is more often the case, I can just curl, pick out my clothes, and then take the curlers out. They take a minute to heat up too.  With the old hot rollers, it took at least 10 minutes to heat the dang things up, then they were so hot you could hear your hair singe!

I purchased the Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers for $30. I picked these because they had assorted sizes. If you have longer hair you may want to get jumbo rollers, or smaller if you have short hair. The main page on amazon.com has an assortment to choose from. The price also can be a lot if you want to spend more. I will tell you that I tried the T3 hot roller set first, and for $100, and I was very disappointed in them. Most of the T3 hot rollers wouldn’t even heat up.

One tip, the clips for the Conair rollers kind of leave a crease in your hair. I purchased these Conair Professional Clips (10 for $7) and they work a lot better. Even with the extra clips I spent a lot less on the Conair that the T3, and I really love the results.

Most all of the new rollers are flocked, and with the ceramic technology, it transfers the heat better, and makes the curls last longer. Plus, it’s much better on your hair.

Do you use hot rollers? Curling iron? Straightener? Let me know in the comments section.
