Website of the Week: Solutions.com

February 6th, 2013

One of my all time favorites. Also one that I used long before the world wide web was created. Back in the catalog days. I never tire of looking at all the products solutions.com offer. Here are a few I found today that I wanted to share.

I love the pull out appliance caddy. I have a coffee maker that sits underneath my cabinet, and every morning I have to pull it out to put water in.  Now I can with the caddy and I don’t have to worry about scratching my countertop.

I cannot get enough of these lazy susan turntables in my pantry! I love being able to find stuff easier.

These spill stoppers free you up in the kitchen! They prevent any spill over. You know a watched pot never boils. But it always boils over when you aren’t around.

When I saw this, it reminded me to look at the pepper spray I carry in my purse and sure enough, it has expired. Time to get another one.  I’ve never had to use it but I pity the fool who tries to mug me!

And I am definitely putting this on my birthday list! A cool gelmat to keep you cool. A must in the summer in Texas because I like covers but I can’t ever cover myself up in the summer because even with the AC running non-stop it just gets too hot!

So whether you are looking for solutions for your kitchen, bathroom, storage, garage, or personal care, I hope you check out solutions.com if you aren’t already a fan.

Tea Bag Buddy

February 5th, 2013

This is one of the handiest little gadgets I have. I found it over a year ago, and use it every time I make hot tea.  Which lately has been often. Allergies. Draining. Hot tea. The Tea Bag Buddy is easy to use. Once you have your tea bag and water in the cup or glass, simply place this silicone cover over the top. You can place the tea bag strings in the slit on the top, so you don’t have to fish them out of the hot water. Once you have seeped the tea to your desired strength, you can flip the Tea Bag Buddy over, and squeeze the cover to get all the tea wonderness into the cup before easily tossing it, without ever touching the tea bag. You know I love clever products!

From the developer:

The Tea Bag Buddy is a fantastic new item for hot tea drinkers. The Tea Bag Buddy provides a convenient way to secure a tea bag’s string without the drinker holding it. Instead, it is placed over the mouth of a tea pot or mug, trapping the hot steam below while keeping the string and tea steeping in the cup or pot. This promotes better brewing temperature and provides for optimal flavor. Then, when you’re done steeping your tea, simply lift and squeeze the Tea Bag Buddy to trap the bag and its wet contents inside. The Tea Bag Buddy is made of 100% silicone so it keeps the tea drinker’s fingers cool while squeezing excess water from the tea bag. The Tea Bag Buddy’s deep well also provides a convenient way to hold the used tea bag between uses. This helps with unnecessary messes. It’s sure to become a tea drinker’s new best friend.

This also makes a great gift so I would purchase several. Then when you have a friend who is sick, you can take them your favorite tea, a cute cup, and this handy cover. I bet they feel better immediately!

App of the Week: Snapseed

February 4th, 2013

I think this month I will do a weekly app related to photography. Now, I am in no way a shutterbug, and I have never gotten the thrill of Instagram. Why would I want grainy pictures? I lived in the era where all the pictures were grainy, and mauve and yellow. Ick. No desire to return there.

I do however like user-friendly photo editor apps that allow me to crop, or frame, or get rid of the red eye, or enhance my beauty. So this month I will try and share with you some of the free apps I like.

First up: Snapseed. Snapseed is very user friendly. When I say “user friendly”, I basically mean I am an idiot, in no way a shutterbug (I think I’ve already established that) and I really don’t want to do anything with my photos other than crop or enhance. I like the auto-correct feature. Keeps me from having to figure out how to make it better. So for those village idiots such as myself, this is a great app. It also has all those fancy-smancy things real shutterbugs want too. If you are like my wanderlust friend that take fabulous scenic photos of your travels, or have children participating in sports, or theater, or just being precious, there are lots of fun features to enhance those photos.

I would definitely download this app for your smartphone or tablet.

Consumer Cafe: Chili Dog Nachos

February 1st, 2013

Are you ready for some football? If you are having a super bowl get-together this Sunday, you may want to include this yummy recipe from Rachael Ray. It’s a different version of one of my favorite dishes, NACHOS!

Chili Dog Nachos

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1 turn of the pan
  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 hog dogs, sliced into 1/2- inch pieces
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 sack yellow corn tortilla chips
  • 1 sack, 10 ounces, shredded yellow Cheddar
  • Sour cream, garnish
  • Salsa, garnish
  • 2 scallions, chopped

Heat a medium skillet over high heat. Add oil then beef, and begin to brown and crumble with a wooden spoon, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then add chopped hot dogs and continue browning, another 3 minutes. Add onions and seasonings, Worcestershire, chili powder, and cumin. Cook another 3 to 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and simmer 5 minutes more.

Preheat broiler.

Arrange corn chips on a platter or in a casserole dish. Top the chips with the cooked chili dog topping. Cover the chili dog sauce with cheese. Melt cheese under hot broiler, 2 minutes, until melted and bubbly. Garnish with sour cream, salsa and chopped scallions.
