Consumer Cafe: Turkey Leftovers

November 23rd, 2012

I will go on record by stating that there is absolutely nothing better for Thanksgiving leftovers than a turkey sandwich, on fresh white bread, with only Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and celery salt. Celery salt is the secret ingredient, and I’m sharing it with you. Try it! You’ll thank me. But let’s keep that secret ingredient between us, okay?

For those of you who want to make another meal out of your leftovers, use that leftover turkey to make turkey soup. My mom always made turkey soup on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  I looked and looked for her recipe but  couldn’t find it for you.  I think she just threw everything in a pot with some broth and water. It was good. Not turkey sandwich good, but good nonetheless.

I found a turkey soup recipe on food.com that looked easy enough so I wanted to share with you:

Turkey Soup
2 cups diced cooked turkey
1 yellow onions, chopped
1 cup celery, diced
1 cup carrots, diced
1 cup fresh sliced mushrooms
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 garlic cloves ( smashed or finely diced)
2 teaspoons butter
3 cups chicken broth
2 cups diced potatoes
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup sour cream
parsley flakes ( to garnish)
  • Sauté the vegetables (with the exception of the potatoes), basil, garlic and rosemary in the 2 tsp butter until lightly browned.
  • Add potatoes, turkey and broth.
  • Simmer approximately 15 minutes.
  • Reduce heat; add milk salt and pepper to taste.
  • Simmer 20 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and serve hot with a hearty dab of sour cream and a sprinkle of parsley for garnish.

After a long day of company and black friday shopping, who doesn’t want a big, warm bowl of soup?  Besides me?

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sites

November 21st, 2012

Are you one of those people that love to get out at 3:00 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving and hit all the sales? Well, there’s good news for you, most stores are opening up on Thanksgiving Day now.  So you will get to sleep in on Friday after a late night of shopping.  Here are some sites to check out for all the ads that have been released. Most of these sites have the in-store deals and the on-line deals as well.  So, while you are waiting for that turkey to cook you can line up all your shopping.

fatwallet.com/black-friday

blackfriday.fm

bfads.net

cyberblackfriday.com

black-friday.net

dealnews.com

retailmenot.com

couponcabin.com

bradsdeals.com

amazon.com  Amazon has black friday deals all week not just Friday!

Also, if you just search “black friday” in twitter you can come up with a lot of links directly from retailers, or other black friday sites.

Interesting tidbit:cyber monday was created in 2005, after retailers noticed that a significant increase in sales on the Monday following Thanksgiving in 2004. They attributed it to the fact that most shoppers went back to work on Monday and with the higher internet connection, did online shopping. Even though most of us can shop at our home computers now with high-speed internet connection, retailers had their first ever billion dollar online shopping day on the Monday following Thanksgiving in 2010. Retailers believe many still shop from work on cyber monday and it has become as much of a tradition as black friday to many. So I think you can expect to look for continued deals throughout the Thanksgiving weekend and through November 26th.

Good luck! Happy Shopping!

Braun Electric Shaver System

November 20th, 2012

If you are male, or know a male who wants an electric razor, let me suggest the Braun Electric Shaver System. This razor comes in several “series”. The newest is the 700 series, which will run you about $200. I purchased the 500 series for my son a few years ago, and he loved it so much I bought one for my husband earlier this year, for about $150. Not only is this a great razor, that gives you a great shave, but the real beauty is the stand.

When you push a little button, it cleans the razor, and gets all those little hairs out. The gross part is that little blue thing at the bottom is a cartridge, and when it’s time to clean it you’ll know because all those little hairs are in there. Replaceable cartridges are easy to find. I just bought a two pack today for $10 at Target. You can search for the 5 series on amazon.com, or look for it at Target or Wal-Mart. It’s a great gift.
